EXPOSITORY WRITING:
Mastering the Academic Essay, incl. High School & College Application Guidance

This is a skill-building master class in academic writing where students of all ages reinforce their understanding of the fundamentals while learning advanced techniques for crafting powerful, persuasive arguments. These 1:1 tutorials are custom-designed to meet the needs of individual students. Writing instruction can be adapted for high school and college application essay formats. Sample topics include the following:
  • Inquiry-based reading (i.e., asking questions & annotating texts to deepen understanding)
  • Multiple strategies for mature analysis of literary texts & multimedia source material
  • Critical-thinking methods to easily identify themes & write convincing, well-supported essays
  • Lateral (“outside the box”) thinking from multiple perspectives to critically analyze the “big picture” & creatively problem-solve 
  • Identifying "strong" v. "weak" word choice, sentences, paragraphs & arguments
  • Grammar proficiency
  • Essential “pre-writing” techniques such as brainstorming, sequencing & outlining
  • Step-by-step writing, revision & proofreading processes
  • Focusing on structure when writing & revising for concision & time management
  • Appropriate vocabulary usage
