MEDIA LITERACY

​This essential media studies program, based on interactive critical inquiry, helps students of all ages come to terms with the overwhelming power of media influence in their lives. Analyzing a range of thought-provoking contemporary media, from network news to Instagram, students will begin to develop invaluable real-world skills: 
  • Understanding bias & how bias shapes perception & action
  • Asking questions from multiple perspectives to acknowledge diverse points of view & practice empathy
  • Discerning fact from opinion
  • Using facts to support opinions in persuasive arguments (aka Expository Essay Writing 101)
  • Distinguishing real news from fake news by corroborating info from multiple legitimate news sources
  • Challenging "authoritative" interpretations of events with an open yet skeptical mind
  • Connecting contemporary issues to historical precedents
  • Identifying the intersectionality of social-cultural-economic-political forces & rights-race-gender-class issues
  • Engaging confidently in cultural conversations that matter
